Before any work that disturbs the surface — sanding, scraping, drilling — a sample should be tested by an accredited laboratory. We do not dry-sand, dry-scrape or mechanically disturb suspect Artex. Skimming over undisturbed Artex does not raise the same risk and is the approach we most commonly recommend.

Will deeply patterned Artex show through a skim coat?
It can — especially with very pronounced spiked or deeply textured patterns. For most standard patterns (stipple, swirl, light fan), a bonding coat and skim coat produces an acceptably flat result. For very deep patterns, overboarding is the more reliable approach. We assess the texture depth and adhesion during the survey and advise accordingly.
