Protective Coating

A high-performance exterior coating applied over sound existing render or masonry — refreshing your property's appearance while delivering excellent weather protection, UV resistance and water-repellent breathability.

Is It Right For You?

Coating vs. new render — a quick guide

The right solution depends on your substrate. Here's how we think about it — and how we explain it during survey.

Protective Coating suits your property when…
  • Render sounds solid throughout when tapped — no hollow spots
  • Cracks are hairline only, following joints or corners
  • Surface is fully bonded — no lifting, peeling or detached areas
  • Render is in reasonable condition, likely under 20 years old
  • Looking for a cost-effective refresh without full replacement
A new render system is better suited when…
  • Hollow or blown sections found during tap test
  • Structural, stepped or wide cracks present
  • Render is lifting, bulging or visibly detaching from the wall
  • Very old render at or beyond its expected service life
  • Persistent damp or water ingress through the wall face

Not sure which applies to your property? Request a free survey — we'll tap-test and inspect the substrate, and give you an honest recommendation. We don't recommend the more expensive option when a coating will do the job properly.

What You Gain

Real benefits for your home — not just features on a spec sheet

  • Sound render, renewed appearance

When the existing render or masonry is structurally sound, a Protective Coating delivers a like-new surface finish without the cost or disruption of stripping and re-rendering — often the most practical and cost-effective solution.

  • Excellent weather and UV resistance

Formulated to resist driving rain, freeze-thaw cycles and UV degradation, keeping your elevation looking well-maintained across Yorkshire's exposed conditions year after year.

  • Breathable and water-repellent

A vapour-permeable, water-repellent finish that allows moisture from within the wall to escape while preventing rain penetration — important for the long-term health of solid-walled properties.

  • Cost-effective when the substrate is sound

Where the existing render or masonry is in good condition, Protective Coating is typically more cost-effective than a full render system. We confirm substrate suitability during survey and recommend accordingly.

  • Your choice of colour and finish

Available in a wide colour range and in smooth or lightly textured finishes, so the result can be matched to the property's character and your personal preference.

Our Process

How we deliver it

A clear, considered process from first survey to final sign-off — no surprises along the way.

  1. 01

    Inspection & Preparation

We inspect the existing render or masonry for soundness, adhesion and any defects that need addressing before the coating is applied. Surfaces are cleaned of dirt, algae, efflorescence and any loose or flaking material.

  2. 02

    Protection & Masking

Windows, doors, paving and surrounding areas are fully masked and protected before work begins. Careful preparation keeps your property clean throughout the process.

  3. 03

    Repairs & Making Good

Cracks and defects in the existing substrate are repaired and made good before coating is applied. A protective coating performs only as well as the surface it is applied to.

  4. 04

    Priming & Surface Preparation

A manufacturer-specified primer or sealer is applied to the prepared surface to improve coating adhesion, regulate surface porosity and ensure a consistent, long-lasting result.

  5. 05

    Professional Application

The protective coating is applied by our experienced team using the correct technique for the specified product and substrate — maintaining consistent coverage, colour and finish across every elevation.

  6. 06

    Final Inspection & Handover

Every project is inspected before completion to confirm consistent coverage, clean edges and a flawless finish. We hand back only when the result meets the standard we expect.

From preparation to final inspection, every stage is carried out with the same attention to detail. That's how we deliver finishes built to perform for years to come.

FAQs

Common questions

What's the difference between a protective coating and silicone render?

Our Protective Coating is a high-performance exterior coating applied over existing render or masonry that is still in good condition. It refreshes the appearance of your property while providing excellent weather protection, UV resistance, breathability and a water-repellent finish. It is often the most cost-effective solution when the existing render is sound and doesn't require replacement.

Silicone Render is a complete rendering system designed for properties that need a brand-new rendered finish or where the existing render has failed. It provides a thicker decorative finish with excellent breathability, durability and long-term weather protection.

During our site survey, we'll inspect the existing substrate and recommend the most suitable system based on your property's condition, performance requirements and budget.

Does a protective coating need much maintenance?

Very little. The coating is highly resistant to algae, staining and weathering, so an occasional gentle wash to remove surface dirt is generally all that's needed to keep it looking its best.

Can a protective coating be applied in any weather?

No — like most exterior coating products, it should not be applied in frost, during heavy rain, or in extreme heat, as temperature and moisture conditions affect adhesion and curing. We plan installation windows around the forecast to protect the finished result.

Will the colour fade over time?

The coating uses UV-stable pigments that resist fading significantly better than standard masonry paint, helping the elevation retain its appearance for longer with minimal upkeep.

Why choose a Protective Coating instead of standard exterior masonry paint?

While standard masonry paint is designed primarily to improve appearance, a professional Protective Coating is engineered to provide long-term protection alongside a decorative finish. Compared with conventional exterior paint, a high-quality protective coating typically offers:

  • Greater resistance to UV fading and weathering.
  • Better water repellency while remaining breathable, helping moisture escape from the wall.
  • Improved resistance to dirt, algae and fungal growth.
  • Better flexibility, reducing the risk of cracking and peeling as the building naturally moves.
  • Longer service life, meaning less frequent maintenance and repainting.
  • A more durable, uniform finish designed for demanding external environments.

If your existing render is in good condition, a Protective Coating can restore and protect your property's appearance without the cost and disruption of installing a completely new render system.

During our survey, we'll assess the condition of your existing render and recommend whether a Protective Coating or a new render system is the most appropriate long-term solution.
