Castleford is a West Yorkshire town within the Wakefield Metropolitan District, sitting on the River Aire between Pontefract and Leeds. Its housing stock is typical of the West Yorkshire coalfield — Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the older residential areas, interwar semis on the residential streets, and post-war housing further out. Many of these properties carry pebbledash or sand-cement render from the mid-twentieth century, and the render on a significant number is now failing or has been patched repeatedly without resolving the underlying problem.
Castleford's position in the Aire valley means it sits in a relatively exposed location, with persistent wet weather through autumn and winter that takes a cumulative toll on any external finish that is not fully weatherproof. Hairline cracking from thermal movement is the most common early sign of a render system under stress. Left untended, those cracks become water entry points — and in older solid-walled properties, moisture inside the wall construction can be difficult and expensive to remedy once established.
