Goole is an inland port town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a housing stock shaped by its nineteenth-century commercial development. The town has Victorian terraces built for dock workers and traders in the grid pattern of streets close to the docks, interwar semis on the residential streets behind, and post-war housing on the estates to the north and east. Many of the older properties have had pebbledash or sand-cement render applied at some point, and the conditions in Goole — flat, exposed and prone to wind-driven rain from the east — make the condition of external finishes a practical rather than merely aesthetic concern.
The East Riding's low-lying position means winter conditions can be persistently damp and cold, with little in the way of natural shelter to reduce the loading on external walls.
