Pontefract is a West Yorkshire market town in the Wakefield Metropolitan District with a housing stock shaped by its industrial and mining heritage — Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the town centre and Tanshelf areas, interwar council housing on the estates, and later 1960s and 70s development across the surrounding areas. A substantial proportion of these properties received pebbledash or sand-cement render at some point in the twentieth century, and much of that finish is now at or beyond the end of its serviceable life.
The combination of age and West Yorkshire's persistent damp winters means that failing render in Pontefract is a common problem. Hairline cracking from thermal movement, patches blowing from the substrate in frost, and staining from water tracking behind the surface are all signs that the existing finish is no longer doing its job. A modern silicone render system — breathable, self-cleaning and through-coloured — replaces ageing pebbledash without the ongoing maintenance commitment of painted coatings.
