Because the colour is integral to the material, monocouche requires no painting and has lower long-term maintenance than painted render systems. External wall insulation (EWI) wraps the outside of a property in an insulation board layer — typically expanded polystyrene or mineral wool — finished with a reinforced render system. It combines a new weather-resistant external finish with a meaningful reduction in heat loss through the walls.

For older solid-wall housing — the Victorian and Edwardian terraces common across much of Yorkshire — EWI is often the only practical way to insulate the walls effectively. Left untreated, failed render allows water to reach the masonry substrate — and in older brick properties, persistent damp can cause efflorescence, salt crystallisation and surface spalling.
